A literature survey concerning root problems and the impact of emissions on forest soil and roots is presented. It is very difficult to identify and evaluate this impact because of the great diversity of forest growth sites and stands. Besides, the impact seems to be highly variable. A long-term monitoring of forest soil including ground vegetation and roots appears to deserve priority in research work performed in this field.
