Within the framework of the French research program DEFORPA (programme de recherche sur les deperissements forestiers attribues a la pollution de l'air), an air pollution monitoring and forest ecosystem research station has been set up in the Vosgian forest by the French Air Quality Agence. The objectives of the station are to establish the temporal trends of the background air pollution level in a stressed forest, and to provide useful data for the assesment of air pollution effects on the vegetation. This station is included into the French nationwide background air pollution monitoring network, and is also a research site for field experiments on air pollution effects on the vegetation.
