- AbstractAn analysis of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls a, b, a + b, and total carotenoids) in current-year an one-year-old needles of Norway spruce (Picea abies /L./Karst) was carried out according to standard methods in autumn of 1988 and 1989. The absolute concentrations of pigments of the needles were found to be only slightly lower than under normal circumstances although samples had been collected in the vicinity of major emission sources. As regards the altitude of sampling plots and expected air pollution, the chlorophyll content values obtained indicate an almost normal trend rather than the impact of air pollution. Therefore, the analysis of total carotenoids was considered insufficient. On the basis of data obtained by sampling inthe area within a 16+16 km bioindication grid, it may be concluded that such kind of sampling is unsiutable for photosynthetic pigment analysis in terms of air pollution impact.
