Abstract
Progeny test of Norway spuce stands (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) in the Black Forest aiming at: 1. Conservation of genetic resources of damaged stands in high altitudes ("genetic bank"). 2. Identification of and supply with adapted reproductive material for affected sites. The practical procedure of a project is described. It is featuring the methods of "forest tree breeders" facing the consequences are considered to be acute and urgent: - Conservation of genetic diversity of forest tree populations. - Scientific support of seed supply activities concerning mateial best adapted for the affected sites. The project introduced combines these two aspects. A progeny test has been started with Norway Spruce of 40 different Black Forest stands. The most important testing criteria are immission tolerance phenomena. The test is designed as a field trial in areas of heavy pollution and under comparatively clean environmental conditions. Moreover, the selected stands are considered as resources for conserving will be supplemented trough conservation by means of seed storage under refrigeration. The programme will be accompanied by isozyme analysis of the different progenies. This may contribute to improve the knowledge about genetic structures and to detect relations between genetic potentials and immission tolerance.
