- AbstractIn the Kocevje forest enterprise 2,000 m3 of silver fir per hectare die back in fir-beech forests per year. Due to worse quality of assortments 20% of the value is lost on the average. 9% of the dead standing trees felled are left in the forest because they are inappropriate for use. The cutting and skidding costs of the silver fir dead standing trees are 22-26% higher than those of regular cutting and skidding. It is wise to perform the salvage cutting of the silver fir annually, irrespective of the dead standing tree density, because the extra costs of the cutting and skidding area are a lot smaller than the annual loss due to the worse timber quality of dead standing trees is.
