- AbstractThe object of this study was a willow carr dominated by two woody species - Salix cinera and S. pentandra. Diurnal courses of photosynthesis and respiration were measured with an IRGA in various kinds of leaves in both Salix species in situ eleven times during the growing season. Dependence ofphotosynthesis and respiration on irradiance, air temperature and air humidity were obtained inthe laboratory. Besides, the spatial distribution of assimilat ory organs was characterized for both Salix species and so was the spatio-temporal variation in ecological factors needed for evaluation of CO2 exchange. On the basis of the dependences of physiological processes on ecological factors, stand structure, and diurnal courses of ecological factors, the balances of CO2 exchange were calculated for selected days. Using these, the seasonal balance of CO2 exchange of the stand and the annual dry matter production of both Sali species were estimated: 865 g.m-2 in Salix cinera and 1347 g.m-2 in S. pentandra.
