- AbstractBasic structures for management-oriented forest growth models have changed little over the last several decades. If additional progress is to be made in the prediction of forest growth, especially under a potentially changing environment, new modeling approaches must be sought. We discuss the use of physiological principles for construction of forest growth models. An example of such a model is presented for aspen. Extensions necessary for modeling at the tree level are discussed. Key components and methodological advances requisite to making such models practical for forest management decision making are outlined.
