The decision taken by the German forestry some time ago to liberalize timber markets has turned out to be correct. The additional opportunities of the Single European Market and of expanding timber markets must be exploited. But the advantages to not fall into the forest industry's lap: its organizational structure must be made more efficient, distribution strategies must be more flexible and tailored to the needs of the customers. A consequent forestry policy without too much populism is needed.
