- AbstractThe hamlet "Kleinstockach", sommunity Bergwang, district of Reutte/Tirol, lies directly as the toe of a steep, wooded slope. A dieback of the stand on this slope, being already in the disintegration phase, would lead to a serious loss of its protective functions against avalanches and stone fall. 1986 restoration measures were started with the aim of regenerating one third of the stand in the next 20 years. On the upper part of the slope an area of about 2 hectares was clearcut with stumps of a heigh from 2 to 3 metres left standing. To prevent snow slabs and snow glides simple structures to stabilize the snow cover were built with a part of the felled trees. Felling and transporting the heavy logs on the steep slope as well as constructing these snow fences was difficult and quite expensive; on the long run it would have been cheaper and better to use prefabricated snow fences for avalanche control. The clear-cut area was fenced in against livestock and game and afforested with spruce (Picea abies) and fir (Abies alba).
