- AbstractBefore the backdrop of the problems regarding the harvesting of small-sized wood and the poor response mechanized harvesting concepts are meeting with in forstry practise, 1613 forest owners and forest businesses inFinland and in the Federal Republic of Germany were interviewed in 1986/87 in order to get information on theif frame conditions, targests and views as far as timber harvesting in forst thinning is concerned. In Finland, the three middle authoritis of the public forest administration, 10 forest business of the timber industry, and 534 private forest businesses with more than five hectares of forest area each were interviewed. The suvey carried out in four out of twenty private forest districts was preceded by a secondary analysis of available stock-taking data material. In the Federal Republicof Germany, 23 middle/central authorities of the forest administrations fo the Laender, 118 public forest offices, 17 community forest businesses with an own business mangagement, 804 private forest busniesses with 5 - 500 hectares of forest businesses with more than 500 hectares of forest area were interviewed by correspondence or, in some cases, orally. The survey shows that until now mechanized forest thinning methods have not been very popular. There are, however, claear differences between the various categories. Finnish timber industry businesses can be compared with German large-scale forest businesses (large portion of public forest offices in the Black Forest and many large-scale private forest businesses in Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Hessen), as these apply mechanized methods to handle 10-40 %, respectively, up to 10 %, of the timber harvested during forest thinning. Those Finnish private forest businesses, who harvest their timber without external halp, as well as German private forest businesses with 5- 500 hectares of forest area each harvest timber motor-manually only.
