- AbstractIn Lower Bavaria small forest propriety is predominant. More than half of the forest area (about 343 000ha) belongs to private holdings that are below 20ha. Two third of this private forests are part of mixed farm holdings. Therefore the structural change in agriculture has a clear effect on the management of private forests. The structural change can be seen most distinctly in the concentration of farmland in holdings that are over 40- 50ha. At the same time the proportion of full time enterprises is decreasing. When farms are abandoned, the farmland is leased to intensively working farm holding, whereas the woodlot usually remains in the possession of the former owner. Thus the number of forest owners without any relation to agricultural management is increasing steadily. This involves a loss of expertise and experience in forest management. Now forest owner associations and state forest offices have a difficult task of inducing these forest owners to manage the forests properly and in a motivated way. Success is only to be expected, if the forest owner associations adjust to the changed conditions by altering their assembly and their task. Additionally, the forest administration has to develop special concepts of consulting for nonfarmholding forest owners.
