Economical aspects always dominated people's relationship to nature. In the 18th and 19th century people made use of the horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) in various ways. These attempts of economical utilization included for example feeding dairy cattle or mast pigs with the fruit, production of a coffee substitute from the nuts or using the wood for contruction. All these different uses failed in the long run. Today the horse-chestnut at best is used to feed the game in forests.
