The old forestry principle of sustained yield - now called sustainable development - is to assess with ecological and natural criterions; forthermore it has to take account maintaining one's hold on the market: it means the dynamic ability of a forest enterprise. Successful rationalization has achieved by decreasing the staff and labourers. In this manner the production costs has been reduced. The production factor capital, however, has been intensified, because the timber growing stock in the forests of various owners has increased. Bad economic results can force cutting back optimal silvicultural objectives, provided that rationalization is not sufficient or in case no financial support given by government. The forestry in Germany is coming to the treshold of a new era, in which the up to now rationalization is not sufficient enough. The organizational structures have to be changed. The goals of reforms are: stronger decrease of the costs and nevertheless intensification of the efficiency. The principle of sustained yield would be broken in case the conversation of nature prevents the forestry owners from tending woods and from planting foreign productive tree species - such as douglas fire. In consequence they would come to the end of economical capability. In order to avoid the irreversible development governmental financial support is neccessary.
