- AbstractFor over 100 years brown coal has been mined in the Lausitz. Almost 75 000 hectares from 400 000 hectares altogether have been mined by now. The landscape is characterized by deserted mining areas and pithead stocks but also by lakes and forests. Half of the 75 000 hectares of mining area have been turned into productive land: 23 000 hectares of forests, 3200 hectares of water expanse, and 8700 hectares of agricultural land. The water regime and the resettlement in the area are problematic. Now there is a large unemployment because the coal mining has been cut by half since 1989. The "Lausitz-Ring", a motorsport and amusement park, is a disputed project. The LAUBAG and LBV mbH are looking after further rcultivation. A typical Lausit forest landscape is planned on about 60% of the area. The mixed deciduous forests planted by forest administrator Heuson (1884-1951 (?) are taken as an example. Earlier efforts will now be classified into "Birch Age" "Red Oak Age" and "Pine Age" (Dr. Preussner). Now mixed deciduous and coniferous forests will predominate and many lakes will determine the landscape.
