Forestry today meets many problems, which in many countries of Europe and oversea seem to be quite similar. in order to analyse the origin of the crisis of forestry and the foresters, long-term sociological studies and observations are presented in the paper. The problems of an increasing number of human beings on earth and the progressing urbanisation in most countries are stressed. In the end of the century more people will live in towns than in villages. Megalopolis agglomerations of human beings create severe psychological problems. These problems lead to nostalgic emotions towards the origins of humanity in an intact nature. The phychological problems can be described with the terms of overcrowdings and space stress, loss of comprehension for natural processes, psychological cancelling of death, loss of individuality, loss of ethic values and of human dignity, humiliation, loneliness and non realistic dreams. The crisis of forestry in this view is part of a greater crisis of non-urban way of life. The need of more intensified studies for a better understanding of the urban way of life and the reaction of forest policies to this are emphasized.
