- AbstractVirgin forests are the best standard for comparing the development of Nature Forest Reserves. Although the proportion of native trees have not significantly changed, Nature Forest Reserves have been managed in former times. This is a report about some scientific travels to Eastern European virgin forests. The observations in the mountainous spruce-fir-beech forests lead to the conclusion that the fir as the strongest tree species disappear medium-term from these stands. The influence from outside to the small areas is to heavy. Too much deer prevent natural regeneration of fir. Air pollution and climate extremites are responsible for the fast decay of old fir trees. The structure of pure beech virgin forests can be stidied in some reserves in East-Slovakia. Different structural appearences are mixed in a small mosaic. There is also a strongly developed vertical structure. Phases with only one crown-layer occur only in a shortterm and on a maximum size of 0.2 ha.
