- AbstractThe storage of acorns of Common Oak (Quercus robur L.) and especially of Durmast Oak (Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Liebl.) for periods longer than two years is a problem not yet solved. In October 1995 experts from Germany and Poland met in Magdeburg in order to analyse the state of the arts and search for new approaches. The studies revealed that because of secondary fungal attack, the thermotherapy aimed at fungi control and extension of the storage period of acorns is limited in its effect. Because of strong fungal growth, cold hardening of acorns for storage at low temperatures under a daily alternating temperature regime has not proved successful. However, tests showed that cold hardening of acorns can be performed so that fungal growth is restricted. For fungus control of acorns, an electrode treatment is studied.
