- AbstractThe head of the "Staatliches Forstamt Deister" (Lower Saxony) initiated a questioning in order to gain knowledge about the rest value of the forest area "Grosser Deister". 1003 forest visitors were asked in a two page questionnaire for details about their habits and demands. The basic aim was to win according data for visitor quiding measures. The questioning disclosed: Mainly persons of the age of 40 up to 60 visit the Deister. A great part of them are either inhabitants of the Lower-Laxony capital city Hannover or persons living close to the Deister, both groups using the Deister as a rest area. Most of the visitors come in groups, using either train or car. The most important motives for a forest visit are the need of rest and the nature experience. Only few visitors think the rest services are insufficient and improvable; particularly the forest restaurants and the woodland nature trails are greatly appreciated. Interest conflicts of different visitor groups do not exist. A major part of the questioned persons would accept limitations in their visit right to protect flora and fauna. Questions that arise are, to which extent the forest visitor should be informed about the protection purpose of sensible protection and rest areas, and how the system of visitor guiding and of the rest services should, be prosecuted in future. Also, the future will show, to which extent the result of the questioning will become an integral part for area affecting planning.
