- AbstractIndustrial safety, teamwork, marketing and, additionally, the necessity to rationalize extensive administration procedures are representing compulsive preconditions to install new techniques of communication in the day-to-day forestry work. Since the late seventies an increasing number of districts has benefitted from the introduction of "Funkwelle Forst", a radio frequency at 69,95 Mc/s, designed especially to meet the requirements in the forestry field. An alternative has been developping with the new mobile telephone networks C and D, systems which combine easy operation with low investment costs and which have, thus, secured significant market shares during the last years. When it comes to the decision which of the systems is bearing most advantages evaluation should start with the technical point of view, i.e. how to get the highest coverage rate in terms of extension. The first step should be to find the best possible spot for the installation of the transmitting/receiving station. Because of the high-speed technical development only latest models of both radio-telephones and cellular phones should be compared. The cost of acquisition of forestry radio networks are obviously considerably higher than those of cellular systems, the operating costs of the so-called Handy's, however, is apparently much higher because of the high rates per cadence in telecommunications. This leads to the conclusion that radio telephones would end up to be more economical. Moreover, it will soon be possible to connect them to telephone lines if asked for. If communication takes mainly place in a network which is restricted both in frequency of use and geographic extension, as is usual in the internal organization of forestry administration, it will prove sensible to maintain - modernized - radio networks. In other fields, as e.g. marketing, supervision and assignment of forestry machines which are working supra-regional etc. where frequently people are involved being only indirectly connected to forestry, it is recommendable to use mobile telephones.
