- AbstractThe article is based on a lecture at the 1995 annual meeting of the Forester's Association in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The author tries to identify action to be taken in order to solve the most urgent problems of German forestry. Three conditions are considered more in detail: (1) The economic and social framework; (2) institutions as property, the forestry firm, and the professional forester; (3) the necessity for marketing both, goods and services, produced by the forestry firm. The socio-economic context at present, because of its profit orientation with preference to short-term speculative success instead of steady state economies, seems to be adverse to sustainable forestry. Ecologists on the other hand tend to eclude human existence and necessities and man's unavoidable influence on ecosystems, while supply of future forestry goods or services as well as stewardship call for forest management. Instead of the traditional orientation at public interst, the forester should search for immediate local demand to be met by means of forestry. This is marketing in order to sell those forestry goods and services for which people or institutions are ready to pay. Thus forestry could gain attractivity in the public.
