- AbstractIn Germany, sponsoring as a means of enterprise communication has developed rapidly over the last twenty years. Enterprises are primarily engaged in sponsoring sports and culture, and so far, socio- and eco-sponsoring have played only a minor role. However, forecasts show that these two kinds of sponsoring are going to gain more importance in the near future. Up to now, eco-sponsoring has taken effect mostly in the field of nature and landscape preservation, the protection of species, water and soil, as well as environmental education. A wide range of different environmental organisations are being sponsored, this also holds for the enterprises being involved in the field of eco-sponsoring. Forests and forestry have also benefitted from sponsoring: In the seventies, recreational facilities were established in forests, and in the eighties, nature protection programs were increasingly supported. Sponsoring money was also spent to deal with the natural disasters which have recently struck our forests. In this context, the creation of the foundation "Forests In Danger" was most beneficial. In the future, forestry will have even more opportunities to profit from sponsoring activities. The re-establishment of the yew in our forests, the conversion of pure stands into mixed stands, or the use of small dimension wood for energy production are some examples for this development. Still, sponsoring also includes some risks for both, the sponsored organisation and the sponsor himself. They can only be avoided when the sponsoring is managed in a professional way. Recently established agencies offer their service in this field.
