Abstract
In vitro experiments on acidification of Ah and H horizons of soils originating from sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) stands in the Quebec Appalachians revealed that the amount of phosphate released to water by H horizons was not limited by acidification, while the phosphorus-fixing capacity of Ah horizons in the presence of added soluble phosphate increased linearly with increasing acidity. This experiment demonstrates the ability of soils with a moderately acid mull humus to limit the available phosphorus pool under acidification of the soil solution.
