- AbstractAbout 15 species of the family of Dipterocarpaceae, mainly of the genus Shorea, produce a nut with edible fat. The species of this group are called Tengwang or illipe nut, and the different species have local vernacular names. The fat composition of the nuts is identical to that of cocoa fat, hence Tengkawang butter ist a perfect substitute for cocoa butter in the manufacture of chocolate, margarine and cosmetic cremes. Since the trees also produce an excellent timber, logging operations threaten these species, but new approahes intend to establish smallholder plantations for the production of Tengkawang nuts and timber in Kalimantan. Chances and constraints of Tengkawang cultivation are dicussed in this paper.
