During the last two decades key data of the market for spruce-sawlogs and - sawnwood have signalized remarkeble stability, however with considerable fluctuations of production, foreign trade, and consumption from year to year: Production of spruce-sawlogs oscillated around an average of 11 Mio m3 per year, consumption (11 Mio m3) and imports (nearly 4 Mio m3/year) of spruce-sawnwood do not show a tendency to increase; domestic production of spruce-sawnwood is slightly inscreasing since 1982/83, the additional quantities being sold mainly abroad. Part of the effective market trends are encouraging for forest owners. They find continuous market outles for large quantities of spruce-roundwood. Exports of sawlogs and sawnwood are increasing. Forest industry as well as timber trade are innovative in regard to utilization. On the other hand, there are also problematical future aspects: A considerable increase of the annual cut of spruce-sawlogs is expected; medium term prospects for exports appear fairly uncertain; the saw milling industry is subject to a rapid process of concentration; many spruce stands havae proved to be sensitive to storm damage. Therefore, forest owners will have to intensify efforts of marketing their most important tree species.
