Dormancy can be described as a sequence of three developmental phases. The mid-phase, endodormancy, is endogenously controlled and has a specific chilling requirement to terminate, a phenomenon termed dormancy break. Dormancy break must occur if normal growth is to resume in the spring. Many different theories have been postulated in the search for the control mechanisms of dormancy development, and many relations have been discovered. The biological events however, are still far from understood.
