- AbstractThis report describes a square spacing experiment with Norway spruce on a good site planted in 1936 and clear felled in 1985. It had two blocks with the plant distances of 1.25 m, 1.75 m and 2.25 m. The blocks were treated with early and late thinning, respectively. The top height was not affected by spacing and thinning. The increase in basal area mean diameter in the wide spacings was moderate in 1985 even in the plots treated with late thinning. The total volume production does not seem to be affected by the treatments. To some degree a shifting toward greater dimensions in the wide spacings has taken place. 50% of the 400 largest trees per ha at top height 10 m did not belong to the 400 largest in 1985. The increment of the 400 largest trees in 1985 appeared to be independent of the density in the observation period. Different treatments did not result in significant differences in taper and branch diameter. Narrow spacing and early thinning resulted in a considerable spread of rot.
