- AbstractA long-term forest planning model called AVVIRK-3 has been elaborated. The model simulates the development of up to 999 strata during a 100-year planning period. The model operates on the basis of number of stems per hectar and the growth of the average tree. Various initial densities and thinning regimes can be simulated. Differing rules of priority of stands for felling can be applied for working out various felling plans. Economic data are included for primary production as well as extraction. The model can be run on microcomputers. The use of the model to determine acceptable felling plans on forest properties is demonstrated. Three optional plans are shown for a forest of 106 ha in Eastern Norway. A path of felling closely corresponding to the Faustmann solution is compared economically with two other options. The first is a path of non-decreasing felling volume. The second is a plan that starts with 20% higher felling volumes during the first ten years and continues with a constant removal later. At a discount rate of 3% p.a., the two alternative yield present net values that are respectively 3.4 and 2.4% lower than the Faustmann solution.
