The paper deals with the transition from self-sufficient- management of small scale forestry in Austria after World War II to market economy. The main problem was the education and the training for the market management as well of the present farm owners as also of the coming generation. The education of the coming generation of farmers was solved by the installation of different types of agricultural schools with forest lessons and practice. The problem of the training of the present farm owners could be solved only by advising the farmers just as in groups as also as single persons in the own forest. Moreover excursions and training courses completed the offer of education possibilities. An example demonstrated that the success of consulting a single person depends not only on the knowledge of the advisor but also of his abilities to motivate the farmer to take the right way. But consulting without a well founded knowledge of the status of the forests is not possible. Therefore actual forest management plans are the indispensable precondition for successful work.
