- AbstractElongating needles of two Sitka spruce (Picea sitchenis (Bong.) Carr.) clones were exposed from bud break to simulated acid rain. Exposure of one clone to realistic intensities, amount, drop sizes, and chemistries at pH >4.2 resulted in significant alterations to epicuticular wax morphology and cuticular membrane thickness. Needles of both clones exposed at pH >4.2 had reduced contact angles and were more wettable. Foliar uptake of Rb+ applied in single radio labelled drops was increased at pH 2.6 in one clone. Uptake of SO4 was increased at pH 2.6 in the second clone. Amounts of applied activity recovered from needle tisues were surprisingly small. The rate of foliar uptake was significantly lower than in crop and deciduous tree species studied.
