The paper describes the sulfate accumulation levels of certain tropical trees under low levels of SO2. Pithecolobium dulce and Caesalpinia pulcherima althia and Pongamia were found susceptible to sulfate accumulation. The nitrogen content in certain plants is found to decrease sulfate toxicity by increasing biomass production through sulfate assimilation. Trees have been ranked as Group A,B,C,D on the basis of sulfate levels and biomass production. Group A trees act as sinks of SO2 by assimilating sulfate accumulations. Group B frees accumulates more sulfate but fails in assimilation and can be used as biomonitors. Group C trees are effected by high peak levels and show acute injury. Group D trees show little response to low levels of SO2.
