Four-year-old plants of Picea abies (L.) Karst. were exposed to eight ozone concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 0.8 ppm. The plants were fumigated for 36 d (7 h.d-1) in controlled environment chambers in the fall of 1987. Only slight chlorotic injury developed during the fumigation period. Oozone exposure, however, resulted in changes in protein banding patterns, and dose- dependent increases were found for putrescine leels and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase activity. The concentration of total as well as of several specific monoterpenes decreased linearly between o.01 and 0.6 ppm ozone. On subsequent outdoor cultivation during winter and spring in ambient air, the treated plants developed visible symptoms on the previous year's needles. The degree of necrosis and chlorophyll loss correlated with the 03 dose applied. The results indicate that ozone fumigation leads to several metabolic changes in Norway spruce, but symptom development may be delayed until the following year.
