The biological degradation of chlorophyll is a striking process; it has been estimated that ca. 10.t chlorophyll are degraded per year. The single steps of degradation have remained obscure for a long time. It is not even known whether only a single degradation oathway exists. This article summarizes the present knowledge on possible steps of degradation. This implies biochemical investigations as well as chemical model reactions. Most recent results with senescing grasses indicate that the single steps of one degradation pathway shall soon be elucidated.
