Abstract
In the paper, the author presented results of studies concerning the influence of pruning Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) on the rate of cicatrization of knots. Conclusions are as follows: 1. The pruning of trees caused an increase of the rate of cicatrization of knots formed in consequence of removal of living branches, dead and dry snags, as compared with trees of the control variant (natural pruning). The mean time of cicatrization of knots in pruned pine trees was shorter by 25 to 50% than in control trees. 2. The rate of cicatrization of knots in pruned trees was higher because this treatment replaced following stages: dying of branches, their decay and falling off, which take place during the natural pruning. Moreover, the dynamics of cicatrization was influenced by the differentiation of stem diameter increments at various heights of the stem, induced by the removal of branches of living crown. 3. Because of the possibility of considerable acceleration of cicatrization of knots and formation of wood layers without knots, what would render possible to gain in the future raw material of high utility class, the pruning should be performed in a greater scale in the forest practice.
