The paper describes the method and discusses the results of a simulation experiment (Weimann 1979), directed on assessing the sampling error of area informations, in common systematic regional forest inventories, under central european silvicultural conditions, if the size of each inventory unit is calculated by the number of sample plots falling into its area (dot grid method, Loetsch 1964). In the experiment systematic regional inventories with different grids were simulated for the land Hessen (ca. 2 Million ha). Based on informations on hand a model of the sountry and its forests was generated in a computer in the form of a twodimensional matrix. Through this electronic landscape the different inventories were run repeatedly. The deviations of the simulation results from the true values of the model indicate the accuracy of similar practical inventories.
