Abstract
Height increment, which is rather insensitive to density, is the only meaningful factor in the competition between trees in regenerations and young stands. Supplemented trees in young, open regenerations are influenced by neighbouring trees, and a height-distance competition index explains 30- 45 per cent of the variation in height growth.
