The first institution for training in the field of forestry was established in Istanbul in the year 1857 by the French scientist Louis Tassy. This school laid the foundations for the beginning of higher education in the field of forestry in Turkey. The school, while changing from time to time its status and name, underwent a continuous development and formed the nucleus of today's Faculty of Forestry of the University of Istanbul. The oldest institution to be established thus, the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Istanbul, and the Faculty of Forestry of the Black Sea Technical University in Trebizond, which started its educational programme during the academic year of 1971/72, underwent a long period of development until today. The remaining eight faculties have all been established during recent years and just recently took up activities for education. Programmes for post-graduate studies have been enacted only in the Faculties of Forestry of the University of Istanbul and the Black Sea Technical University in Trebizond.
