The first forest research unit in Turkey was founded in 1952 in Bolu. It moved to Ankara in 1955 under the name of the Forestry Research Institute. In consequence of the fact that poplars form an important potential in Turkey's forestry, the Poplar Research Institute was foundet in 1962 in Izmit. Both institutes, with their division presidencies in Ankara and Izmit and with their research directorates spread over different regions of the country, completed 720 research projects till 1991. Because of the importance of research studies, central and brach institutions of those two institutes have been transformed into a brach organization which resorts directly under the Ministry of Forestry. Thus, from 1993 on, eleven research directorates are continuing with their research activities in different regions of the country.
