The identification of the sapwood area on spruce trunks at breast height and at the crown base was done by different methods: the visual method after the saw cut or disk polishing, the NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) technique and the computer tomography. The results of these different methods showed that the sapwood and cross sectional wood areas were identical not only quantitative but also in patterns. There was a strong correlation between the sapwood and cross sectional wood areas at breast height and at the crown base and the needle mass.
