- AbstractReclamation experiments were conducted in the Rhine lignite mining district using organic substrates (Biosol, bark compost, domestic waste compost and leaf litter compost) on levelled and unlevelled sites. It was the aim of this study to determine the treatment(s) which best accomplished a lasting increase in soil organic carbon. Soil microbial properties resulting from the various tratments were also monitored. Compared to the mineral fertilizer and the reference plots, all organic substrates resulted in an initial increase of the microbial biomass; this increase was highest with domestic waste compost (1400Myg Cmic g-1 soil). In the second year of the experiment, Cmic of all organic treatments decreased to levels below 400Myg g-1 soil; however, this was still higher than Cmic of the control plots. Four years after starting the experiment, Corg was highest on the domistic waste and bark compost plots. Organic substrates that are readily decomposed (Biosol, domestic waste compost) resulted in a lower specific respiration (qCO2), indicating a more efficient C utilization.
