Approximately 50-60 % of the forested areas in the state forests of Bavaria are regenerated artifically (planting, sowing) the rest is naturally regenerated. Most planting is done in the mountainous regions in the higher elevations. Very often these areas are not accessible until June and by mid- October snow can stop all work. A variety of plant assortments and methods are presented to assure planting success on the difficult, high-elevation sites. The following techniques are presented : Agricol root-dipping can improve and maintain the water status of bare-rooted stock. Samvac-plastic foil can improve plant storage. "Plant-fresh" sacks maintain fresh planting stock during transport and storage, planting time extended till the end of May. Refrigerated storage of plants in combination with the above can extend the planting time until mid-June. Container plants - twice as expensive as bare-rooted plants but planting is possible from June until November.
