Results of intra crosses breeding of P. maximowiczii during the period from 1957 to 1985 are briefly reported. In the 1st program as a trial was started in 1957 and eight superior clones were already selected by 20 years results. In the 2nd program started in 1970, 151 promising individuals were selected at four progeny test plantings and clonal testing are being carried at present. In the course of the two programs, clonal selection were made and gene reservation stands are establishing on many traits for the materials of future breeding, and heritability were also estimated on each traits. The traits, selection were done are as follows: 1. Security for planting. Resistance to field mice and mountain hares. Resistance to foliage eating insects. Resistance to early frost and later frost. 2. Adaptability for climatic and soil conditions. Frost hardiness. Tolerance to droughty soil moisture condition. 3. Growth correlating characters. Photosynthetic activities. Resistance to leaf rust. 4. Wood characteristics. Bole straightness and branching habit. Spiral grain, Ratio of heart wood. Wood density, shrinkage. Fiber characteristics. Testing for pulp and rotary veneer. After testing suitability for pulp and paper or veneer wood, the designs for planting were proposed.
