Abstract
Establishing and maintaining trees to protect farmsteads, fields, feedlots, and wildlife is a vital part of agriculture in the Great Plains, and plains forestry profession. Nearly all the principles and silvicultural techniques employed by an industrial forester are also used by the plains forester in attempting to grow trees in a climate best suited for grass, and the job of a plains forester is in many ways similar to the job of an industrial forester. With the recent establishment of the Windbreak Technology Working Group in the Society of American Foresters, and the Shelterbelt Silviculture Working Party in the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations, plains forestry is beginning to receive the national and international recognition that it merits.
