Professor Samset's visit in 1961 was a milestone in British logging development. At the time of the visit horses extracted 90% of the timber being cut. Productivity was low - due mainly to poor equipment and training. On Professor Samset's advice we concentrated initially on simple cable cranes such as the Isachsen Mark III, set up proper facilities for training cutters and winchmen and laid the foundations for a skilled and experienced labour force. Subsequent developments of longer reach cable crane, light frame steered skidders for early thinnings, modification of agricultural 4x4 tractors to forest use, and use of early forwarders were but a logical progress down the path on which we had been set by Ivar Samset. Modern forwarders now dominate our working, and the increasing use of harvesters fulfills Samset's view, stated nearly 30 years ago, that the labour content of forest work had to be reduced by all possible means.
