- AbstractThe International Labour Organisation's involvement in the forestry sector stretches over a period of 50 years. Thanks to its collaboration with FAO, ECE and IUFRO, a considerable amount of work has been accomplished, consisting of studies, publications and the organisation of technical meetings. The focus has been on occupational safty and health, vocational training and employment. While much progress has been made in the industrialised countries, for instance in improving the ergonomic features of chain saws, a lot needs to be done in the developing countries, especially as regards dramatically high levels of accidents. Work on these and other social issues continues in the framework of the ILO's Industrial Committee on the Forestry and Woodworking Industries that was established in 1985.
