- AbstractIn the paper, author presented results of studies concerning the influence of pruning Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees on the hardness of wood in zone adjacent to knots. Conclusions of the studies are as follows: 1. The pruning causes a reduction of wood hardness and of its variation in the zone adjacent to knots, as compared with (not pruned) control trees. 2. The differentiation of wood hardness in the zone adjacent to knots is dependent on: distance of wood tissue from the knot, zone above and below the knots, height of the occurrence of whorls on the stem. 3. Because of possibility of obtaining thanks to pruning trees wood with inconsiderable share of compression wood, and thus of better utilization possibilites, this treatment should be more widely applied in the practice.
