Abstract
According to actual-condition researches on the functions of soil conservation by tree root networks, these tree root networks can control and also prevent rockfall, debris discharge, avalanche, soll erosion and shallow landslide because of the reinforced soil strength and combination of tree trunk. In order to evaluate the quantitative effects of roots, the authors made a large-scale direct-shear apparatus and carried out a series of experiments on soil shear test with live tree roots. From the results, in the case of a young tree ( Cryptomeria Japonica : SUGI ), it can be seen that the existence of roots in the soll increased the shear strength by at least 15 % compared with that of a soil block without roots. Furthermore, both the displacement of soil block and the period of soil failure were longer than that of soil without roots because of the characteristics of elasticity in soil blocked with roots.
