Abstract
The International Seminar on Mountain Forests and Avalanches, which was organized by the lUFRO Working Party of Snow and Avalanches in conjunction with the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research was held in Davos, September 25-28, 1978. 32 participants from 9 countries discussed the interactions among snow, avalanches and mountain forests. The Seminar consisted of a preface, an introduction and 21 lectures on six main topics: - Snow cover in forest sites, - The influence of the snow cover on forest plants, - Snow forces on forest plants, - Avalanches with respect to mountain forests, - The ecosystem of mountain forests with regard to avalanche protection, - The State of the mountain forest, avalanche protection and silvicultural measures. Conclusions and suggestions that had been derrived from the previous lectures were discussed at the end of the Seminar. Two half day excursions and a final two days study tour in the forests of Canton Grison helped to enlarge and illustrate the main topics. Proceedings were published in 1979 and are available from the Swiss Federal Institute of Snow and Avalanche Research, 7260 Davos-Weissfluhjoch, Switzerland.
