In 1962 an additional pollution source went into operation in a valley basin (Aichfeld) already suffering (to an unknown extent) from SO2. Five years later an investigation was made to find out whether this had caused a demonstrable increase in pollution in the adjacent forest areas. In addition to recording the individual pollution values, chemical needle analyses and core analyses were made. The annual-ring curves and increment trend were determined by a graphical/computational method using Bitterlich's curve compensating instrument which has proved extraordinarily useful for such diagnoses. The results showed that the amounts of SO2 emitted annually from the new source were upt to three times those of the other SO2 pollution sources. the orographic situation and the relative frequency of calms and inversions promote temporary increase in air pollutants, especially in the region below about 900 m above sea level. The results of chemical needle analyses from different years indicated an increase in the pollutant content in the direction of the new pollution source. the percentage content of sulphur in the 1967 analyses in 1-year needles was between 0.08 and 0.18; in 1969 the values reached 0.25 % S, in part of the region, which indicates that the pollution varies greatly from year to year; this can be explained by the working of the new pollution source. the core analyses showed that since 1962 (especially 1963) an increment-inhibiting factor had arisen (decrease of up to 50 % in ring widths). The coincidence in space and time of the different results enables us to draw the confident conclusion that the new pollution source has caused a considerable worsening of the forestry fume-damage situation in Aichfeld. By combining several methods of recording and investigation, it was still-possible to prove this, even though prior investigations had not been made at the proper time to provide evidence.
