Thermophilism in the fungi, as defined in the foregoing study, relates to those fungi which grow only within the temperature range of 20° to 50°C or higher, with the maximum temperature, at which a known fungus (Humicola lanuginosa) will grow, occurring at 60°C. Forms such as Aspergillus fumigatus, Absidia ramosa, and others, which may grow at or near 50°C but which also grow well at temperatures below 20°C, are considered thermotolerant and are excluded from the true thermophilic fungi.
