The Afromontane forest flora is shown to be extremely diverse in its chorological, ecological and taxanomic relationships, and in its probable means of dispersal. It is suggested that this diversity is incompatible with climatic models which postulate the almost total disappearance of forest from the face of Africa during Pleistocene phases of maximum glacial advance. It also seems that a much longer period than 20 000 years is needed to account for the complex patterns described.
